Here are what works when considering how to rank on Google in 2020 or even how to improve your search engine ranking on Google if you are ranking for some key terms already.

No1. Do Proper Search Analysis Before Writing.

This is the first thing that will determine whether you will show up in search or not especially on the front Google front page which where you will get eyeballs on your blog. The second page is dead zoon, no searcher goes there.

If a keyword already overused or saturated trust me there’s nothing you can do to rank higher than those authority sites who have already published a post on the topic

Wait a moment, the only way can outrank those authority sites is by building backlinks,  but Google does not want you to build backlinks.

They rather, want the backlink to come naturally and trust me, Google knows when your backlinks are not naturally no matter how white-hat you try to make the backlink which you might get away with for a start, but later on, Google will catch up with you and de-rank your site.

So the best thing is to look for keywords that are not over-saturated from the onset.

What you can do here is to check the competition level of the keywords you want target in your article even before writing the actual content and make sure the article you are creating is actually addressing the searcher intent for that particular keyword or query.

How to Choose Best Keywords for SEO

So here is how I settle on a keyword to use in my article:

First, I will,  on my own come up with possible search query for a topic I want to write about, and then I will start typing in the query into Google search bar to see what Google will suggest.

With the ideas, Google will give me while typing and at the end of the search results after I have entered a query, I can then copy the search suggestion including my initial query to Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest to check for the competition of each keyword.

And finally, before settle, I like to also check each keyword the DA (Domain Authority) of the websites that is already ranking for that particle keyword itself.

Keyword planner will not show you the domain authority (DA) of a site, but Ubersuggest will show you the DA of a site.

I also like to see how detailed those who have already written on this topic is. That will give a guide as to how much work I need to do on my own article to rank also.

No2. Optimize Article for Your Keyword or Search Query

The next step on this post that shows you how to make blog appear first in google search, article with the keywords you are trying to rank for.

I am not going to even talk much on this, but this a is very, very important. Google wants you to use a key phrase you are targeting within your article several times to help their bot know what your article is all about.

This is called “keyword density”. Some bloggers will tell you to go and check on order post from a website that is already ranking for that key term to know how much optimization you need to make for your article.

I don’t all that, but what I have found to work the majority of the time naturally and intentionally mentioning the keyword  3 to 5 or 6 times within my article depending on the length of the article and length of the keyword.

For instance, for this article, I wanted to rank for the keyword “how to improve site ranking in Google search”.

I had to include it first, in my title, next in the first paragraph and third, in the H2 header tag and now I just mentioned it again in the paragraph or sentence above.

As we continue in this article, I might still have more need to mention the keyword 1 to 3 more times within this article and I assure you that, they will all appear naturally, but it will all be intentional.

No3. Include LSI (Latent semantic indexing) Keywords within Article.

Besides the keyword density or optimization, the next thing that will help get you blog to rank on Google is optimizing article for LSI keywords.

The LSI keywords are other sub-keywords that related to your main topic. For instance, for this post one of the LSI keywords I used here is “how to choose best keywords for SEO ranking” I could also have used “how to pick keywords for SEO ranking”.

It is not just enough to mention these LSI keywords ones in a paragraph, but you have to, at least use it ones in the H2 or H3 header tag for Google bot to really notice it.

Including so many related LSI keyword within your article will also help Google know how detailed your article is and that will make them rank you above a site that was not as details as you were. BUT please don’t just spam the LSI keywords address with of the searcher intent.

Google-likes to show a more comprehensive post where a searcher will get the answer to all the possible questions he or she might have in one post rather than many post.

Doing this is one on-page SEO that must be done if you want to increase site SEO ranking on Google search results.

Here are checklists of on-page optimization you need to perform for each blog post on your site before it goes public.

Do this on-page Optimization before you press the publish button :

  • Including keyword in your title tags and meta descriptions
  • Uses keywords in your headings and subheadings
  • Structure your internal and external link ( include of the relevant links to the previous post you published and include external resources relevant to your content)
  • Optimize for voice search ( this require that you give short concise answer responding to question within 2 to 3 line after your H2 or H3 tag. There many ways to do this but I will cover this in a feature article.

No4. Domain Authority is Important  so Build Quality URL

If I am honest with you, I must say, domain authority is one of Google ranking factor but it isn’t the major or the only factor that Google will use in ranking your website. I ranked the site I showed you stats above with 0 DA.

However, changing your URL or domain too often can definitely have an impact on the performance of your site or blog on search over.

Anytime your URL is changed, all the existing links to your site may be broken, unless you create proper redirects. This is because the links that go to your site (your backlinks) indicate to Google that those other websites find your site useful and reputable.

Having more backlinks from other reputable sites generally correlate with higher Google ranks but that is when it all came naturally and not when you are buying them. What this simply means is that if you want to improve your Google rank in 2020, you need to keep your URL structure the same.

Once you change your URL, it means that your site will have to be re-indexed or crawled by Google afresh, which will make you lose your existing ranking.

No5. Switch To  Secure Site Url (i.e From http to https)

So next thing to have in mind if you are really looking for how to increase SEO ranking on Google for your site or blog, is your Domain URL (Universal resource locator).

One of the steps on how to rank on Google in 2020 is by switching your website from HTTP to HTTPS.

Note that since 2017, Google has flagged sites as not secure if they are not under HTTPS. Most Domain registrar and hosting company offer this for free however there are those that will charge just a tiny sum for it. I recommend Bluehost because their hosting comes with free domain registration for your first year and free Https cert. Also, read this Ultimate Guide on How to Start a WordPress Blog on Bluehost

Having a HTTPS secure website provides users with 3 key layers of protection which are:

  • An Authentication: This helps to prevent an attack and provides a guarantee that a user is communicating with the exact website they intended.
  • An Encryption: This provides privacy by encrypting the exchanged data, and in turn ensuring that conversations will be kept private and information will not be shared.
  • The Integrity of Data: This prevents data from being secretly modified or corrupted during a transfer.

Just imagine that someone visits your site and met with an alert from Google that the website is not secure, what do you think will happen? The visitor won’t stick around to check out your content, they will just bounce. In knowing how to rank on Google in 2020, Google has publicly stated that the security of sites is a ranking factor in the search algorithm, so having an HTTPS webpage will also help you. This one of the ways on how to improve site ranking in Google search that cannot be neglected. You don’t want this.

No6. Run an SEO Audit of Your Site to see if Your Site Layout is SEO Friendly.

When looking at how to increase SEO ranking on Google, the next aspect that you cannot ignore is building a generally SEO friendly blog or website. But it is not something you need to overly obverse about if you are using a good WordPress theme. I use Astra theme in almost all my blog.

A technical SEO issue on your blog can make or break the way your websites performs on Google.

So if you don’t know what an SEO audit is, it simply means that you check the health of a website and find out what fixes might be needed to improve how your website performs.

I recommend you use Ubersuggest or SEMrush (FREE or Paid) to audit your website.

Note that SEMrush and Ubersuggest are the best SEO tools in the market loved by my and many.

Using SEMrush to Audit Your Blog:

  • You can visit
  • You need to create an account.
  • After which, confirm your email address.
  • Go under the SEMrush Dashboard and add up your website to monitor the performance.
  • You can also select your target country (where you want to rank) from the dropdown menu.
  • After you must have set up your website properly in SEMrush, the tool will show you the Audit report.

You want to note what the report says. Your success depends on the SEO Audit report you got, you have to take the necessary actions.

No7.  Satisfy the searcher Intent and Provide Good Quality Content.

It is true that Google loves fresh and frequent content but each of these content your post also has to answer, address and satisfy the intention behind the mind searchers.

For instance, if an article was to be about “Red dresses for admin work”, you want to write and show only dresses that can be worn for an administrative job.

You might expand to blue, brown white or any other colour of administrative work dress, but by the time you start including wedding and date night red dresses, that will be out of the point

You are no longer satisfying the searcher intent because the searcher was looking for what to wear to work and wedding or date night is not the occasion here, work is.

Most times, it’s not how much you post, but the value that your posts offer the readers.

I see a lot of blogs try to publish content as quickly as possible or engage in a click-bait just because they to rank for some many keywords. This is a bad practice that doesn’t help in the long run. It is better to publish less often, but with good and useful content that engages and keeps the interest of your intended audience than more for people who will despise your content because of they feel its a waste of their precious time.

However, if you have a way to do quantity and quality at the same time, that should way forward. This will get your blog to ranking faster and batter.

If you have any redundant pages on your website that are ranking on Google, I would advise you have to get rid of them. Your job is to have a concise site that attracts traffic that will stay.

Just think about it for a moment, if your content gain traffic very fast but that traffic doesn’t stay, then the time spent on the site and bounce-rate will suffer as a result, you will at some point lose your overall ranking in Google eyes on a long run.

No8. Have A Good Site Architecture or Structure

Having good site architecture simply means organizing all of your site pages and information in the most logical style so that they are easily accessible. Note as a simple guideline, it shouldn’t take more than three clicks to get to the deepest part of your website.

Doing this will help you in two ways.

  • i) Increase Retention and reduced Bounce Rate.

If your site is very confusing and causes users to click back to the search engine result page, then your bounce rate increases and your user session time will drop. Bounce rate and session time is ranking in Google. In fact that is what they use to start rating the Authority of a page.

If the people who landed on your blog post after entering a search query in Google search bar stayed long on your blog post.

And afterward did not do back on Google to start looking for the same information in other listed blog on Google search page, then you did a good job.

This simply tells Google that your content helped the person find the answer to his or her question and for this Google will rank your post better.

  • ii) Quick Google Site Crawling

The second way good site structure helps is that Google will be able to crawl your post and pages more easily and quickly.

Just like when your site becomes difficult to navigate, your visitor will follow the path of the least resistance and go somewhere else.

So it is with Google crawler bots. When they visit your site and cannot figure what is what, they bounce.

That is why, you need to make blog or site so easy to navigate and to easy to find things.

No9. Make your Blog Mobile Friendly

Next step on this post on how to improve site ranking in Google search is, to make your site mobile friendly.

Currently, web users interact with Google on a wide range of platforms. And Google cannot tailor all search results to those with keyboards and computer screens anymore.

This simply means that any content written for desktop screens will not look exactly the same on mobile or tablet devices. However, for logistical reasons, there is often less space on the mobile version of a webpage than the original desktop.

The current discovery on mobile SEO optimization suggests that because more mobile searches are being made than ever before, so online publishers should optimize for mobile searches.

As difficult as this may sound, the truth is most recent WordPress themes are already mobile-friendly you just need to go for the ones that are mobile-friendly.

I use Astra for this site and it is mobile friendly but here is a list of other mobile-friendly themes you can use for your site as well.

No10. Speed-up Your Blog Page Load Time

Finally step you must consider in this post on how to improve ranking in Google search results, site page load speed. Though Google will not de-rank your blog or site for moderate load speed, if your site becomes overly slow, then it is a cause for Google not to rank you high on the search result.

And you might wonder why? You see, people generally even you and I would not love to stick around for seconds more on a content loading fast. We simply bounce to another blog that will provide the information shaperly.

And this signals to Google that your blog is not giving the searchers the information they want which makes Google to stop sending people to your blog by listing another fast website higher than yours.

Currently, there are three main platforms versions for any website, which are the mobile, tablet, and desktop platforms. So you must optimize for all three.

Having a page speed optimization is most commonly tested against the desktop platform.

But there are a lot of websites that do not increase their page speed for mobile and tablet platforms. Note that for you to rank in 2020, Google takes all three into account when ranking your web pages in the search results.

What this simply means is that you could have an increased page load speed on the desktop platform, but still won’t rank well because the mobile and tablet platform templates loads very slowly due to lack of optimization.

Google’s page speed insights is a good platform to start your cross-platform testing as it measures load time both from a desktop and from a mobile perspective. You can also use GTmetrix here anything above 51 on both tool will not affect your ranking.
